Queen Latifah
Dana Elaine Owens is an American singer and rapper better recognized under the stage name, Queen Latifah. in film, music and on television, Queen Latifah has won two Screen Actors Guild Awards (two Image Awards), a Grammy Award, six more Grammy nods and nominations for the Emmy Award. Queen Latifah was born in and was raised in Newark New Jersey the daughter of Rita a schoolteacher who worked in Irvington High School and Lancelot Owens Jr. as a police officer. Latifah's parents divorced at the age of Latifah was 10 years old. was ten years old. Latifah was a student at a Catholic school and was educated at Newark New Jersey. She was a member of in the Baptist church. When she was 8 Her cousin gifted Latifah the name of a stage Latifah which translates to gentle and loving in Arabic. Always tall, her height of 5'10 inches Latifah was a forward for her high school basketball team. As part of a school production she performed the song Home from The Wiz. Latifah began beatboxing with the rap group Ladies Fresh. Latifah was member of Flavor Unit - a group of rappers who united around the producer DJ Mark the 45 King. Mark James (aka DJ Mark the45King) recorded a demo of Queen Latifah rap Princess of the Posse. He then gave it to Yo! MTV Raps Freddy. Dante Ross of Tommy Boy Music, who worked for Latifah during that time was awed by her song. In 1988 she released Wrath of My Madness as Latifah's first single.
